AT&T: Building Southern California's 21st-Century Connection to the World

In over 140 California cities and counties, AT&T is ushering in a new era of communications with a suite of innovative, next-generation services.

Consumers across the state now have access to a portfolio of Internet Protocol (IP)-based services that includes faster Internet access speeds and an exciting new choice for television.  These advanced services are already available in many Southern California cities including: Arcadia, Alhambra, Burbank, Glendale, Montebello, Monterey Park, South Pasadena, Temple City and parts of Los Angeles and Pasadena.

AT&T’s commitment to deliver a new world of choice to Californians brings long-overdue competition to cable providers. And we all know that consumers win when companies compete – and that’s something that has been missing in the cable market for the last 40 years.

Without choice, cable rates have increased more than 92% over the past decade. FCC data shows that in markets where competition exists, cable rates have dropped an average of 20-40%. Annual savings to consumers in the greater Los Angeles area are expected to range from approximately $320 million to more than $460 million a year once competition really takes hold.

AT&T is the only national service provider to offer a 100% IP-based television service, giving consumers something cable-based platforms can’t offer.  And, AT&T’s offer allows consumers to integrate their cell phones, computers, televisions and home phones, giving them the power to determine how, when, what, and where they want to communicate.

AT&T’s IP-based television service is not cable TV – it’s better than cable, and we’re excited about it. It’s the next generation of video service and it has the potential to provide customers with more choices, including niche programming of interest to diverse audiences – especially the wide-ranging audiences we have here in and around Southern California.

Consumers are excited about having a choice as well, and for good reason. Recently, Consumers for Cable Choice, reported that 87 percent of consumers want a competitive option to cable TV. That means nearly 9 out of 10 people want additional choice and competition when it comes to cable television. That’s where AT&T can really deliver.  Our video service provides customers with many interactive features and gives them the ability to program their digital video recorder (DVR), set parental controls and other features from any computer or cell phone – and to do so from across town or from across the country.

You can also search for a program using an actor’s name, add customizable weather, sports, traffic and stock information to the TV screen and take advantage of multiple picture-in-picture technology and record up to four programs at once.

Our advanced services will also include a new, feature-rich IP-based phone service that will allow customers to take advantage of advanced features and functionality giving them new and exciting ways to communicate.

Also, unlike other voice services that use Internet technology, our next-generation voice service delivers great sound quality and reliability because it’s a managed service delivered over our advanced fiber-rich, IP network.

Our investment in California’s broadband infrastructure will connect consumers to one of the world’s most advanced local and global networks with sophisticated, integrated IP-based services.

An advanced network in Southern California not only benefits our residential customers, but it’s an important platform for economic development, job growth and investment.

We’re excited that consumers will finally have a real choice when it comes to choosing how they receive their home entertainment and AT&T is ready to deliver.
